bunkhouse noun \benk-haus\ a building that was historically used to house working cowboys on a ranch in North America.   The standard bunkhouse was a large open rooom with bunkbeds (beds built one above the other).  While the modern bunkhouse today is still in existence on some large ranches that are too far away from towns for an easy daily commute, it now has electricity, heating and modern indoor plumbing.
